JD Edwards launches B2B application

Edwards has adapted its eXtended Process Integration middleware technology to link with external suppliers, customers and partners and create private b-to-b exchanges.

NEW YORK -- JD Edwards has continued its push into the collaborative e-commerce software market, adapting its eXtended Process Integration (XPI) middleware technology to enable its clients to link with external suppliers, customers and partners and establish private business-to-business exchanges.

The revitalized enterprise resource planning software vendor, which has been steadily extending its portfolio of enterprise software through acquisitions, technology licensing deals and internal development, said it has delivered a collaborative commerce package for the high tech electronics industry, based on RosettaNet's XML messaging standard.

Memec, a leading U.S.-based distributor of advanced-technology semiconductors, will be the first of JD Edwards' customers running its flagship ERP software OneWorld Xe to use the technology outside the firewall.

Memec plans to use XPI to establish a private exchange that will allow its partners to access information such as sales orders, purchase orders, acknowledgments and receipts as this data appears throughout the Memec supply chain. The company will also have the ability to choose to collaborate with new partners or participate in other exchanges with minimal additional integration costs.

The development is significant for JD Edwards because it represents the company's first foray into the business-to-business (B2B) software market following its licensing from Active Software in June last year of the ActiveWorks e-business middleware technology, which JD Edwards used to build its XPI interoperability engine. Active Software was subsequently acquired by WebMethods.

Until now the technology has mainly been used by JD Edwards to enable its customers to link together their disparate internal systems. But the company always saw it as a means to extend its B2B software footprint and facilitate easier out-of-the-box e-commerce between companies, no matter what systems or standards they utilize.

XPI's flexibility and ease of implementation should enable JD Edwards to take a lead in the development of collaborative-commerce applications for the high tech electronics industry, which has moved quickly to adopt the RosettaNet e-trading standard. However, JD Edwards plans to adapt the software quickly for other industry verticals, such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals and automotive, that have well-defined messaging standards.
