Difference between data and application integration

What is the difference between application integration and data integration? If one system doesn't expose APIs, how can we integrate that system with another one?
Application integration, includes data (or information) integration. Application integration leverages four solution patterns: service-oriented, information-oriented, portal-oriented, and process-oriented. Each has it's own advantages and disadvantages.

If no API is exposed, you have many other alternatives, including going directly to the database, talking to the...

transaction layer, binding to middleware, or even scraping a screen.
