OutSystems has rolled out version 6.0 of its Agile Platform application development environment for building enterprise-grade, Web-based applications rapidly, with new mobile development capabilities and a cloud-based option. Other enhancements include an integrated suite of what the company calls “business ready” applications and a newly designed UI.

According to OutSystems’ Mike Jones, vice president, worldwide marketing, the new apps@outsystems suite of 12 business applications are integrated using a service-based architecture, are free to use and easily changeable. Each application includes an automated try, change, go-live process. The apps encompass HR, CRM and customer-facing processes such as e-commerce.
With the Agile Platform’s Go Mobile Initiative, Jones said enterprise customers now have an automated and simplified way to build mobile Web-based applications for iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile 7 platforms. “The challenge from an architectural perspective is [developers] have to learn a whole bunch stuff that’s still immature, like JQuery and JSwing as a framework to build mobile apps; that is heavy lifting. We built in the concept of mobile themes, so you can click, drag and drop to build mobile [browser-based] Web apps for business.”
Also new is the option for customers to license Agile Platform as a cloud-based Platform-as-a-Service offering running on Amazon EC2. And finally, Jones said, OutSystems gave the platform’s user interface a “new skin.” He explained, “We reorganized it to address some of the complexity we’ve seen creep into the product over the last several years as we’ve added functionality to deliver Web 2.0 apps. We reorganized the whole user experience to make it more intuitive and increase efficiency.”
