Mobile apps and cloud computing may be the drivers for IT in coming years

IBM developerWorks’ latest survey shows that IT professionals expect mobile and cloud computing to be the two major forces in application development for the foreseeable future. According to the survey, 91% anticipate cloud computing will replace on-premise computing as the primary model for IT acquisitions and mobile and cloud computing are seen as the top two hottest career opportunities moving forward.

According to Mike Riegel, VP of marketing for IBM’s ISV and developer relations, “The cell phone is not just a gadget — it’s what IT has become.” The SearchSOA team talked with Riegel last week about the recent survey. Riegel said that not only are mobile and cloud computing both important, they are also highly interrelated.

Reigel cited Gartner estimates that mobile application revenues will grow almost five fold over the next two years. So there’s obviously plenty of growing space in mobile application development. And as CRM developers realized early on, the cloud and mobile apps go hand in hand. With access to a well-built cloud, a mobile device doesn’t need the power to run all your business critical applications, it just has to have the power to access them as they run on the cloud.
